Well, this is a big letdown. I was hoping that Peter would put in a
rousing performnce of his nominated song at the Oscar show next week.
But his reasoning here is perfectly understandable. Those Oscar show
producers are such pricks!

Peter Gabriel Declines Opportunity To Perform At Academy Awards Over New
Format

Reportedly, Peter Gabriel has written a letter to the Academy of Motion
Picture Arts and Sciences notifying them that he will not be performing
his nominated song "Down To Earth" as part of the Academy Awards show
this year. Gabriel has allegedly stated that the new format, which
performs all of the nominated songs in a single medley, doesn't allow
enough time to pay proper respect to the song writers and performers,
with Gabriel's excerpt of that medley allegedly being approximately 65
seconds.

Peter Gabriel's full letter to the Academy reads as follows:

"I was delighted when "Down to Earth" was nominated for an Oscar. I was
also pleased to have been asked to perform the song in the Oscar
ceremony. However, in recent discussions with the Producers, it became
clear that despite there being only three nominees, only 60-65 seconds
was being offered, and that was also in a medley of the three songs. I
don't feel that is sufficient time to do the song justice, and have
decided to withdraw from performing.

I fully respect and look forward to the Producers' right to revamp the
show. Even though song writers are small players in the film making
process, they are just as committed and work just as hard as the rest of
the team and I regret that this new version of the ceremony is being
created, in part, at their expense."

I still very much look forward to attending the ceremony."

Dear God....

Talk about alienating those you are suposed to be there to honour!

Still I suppose it means they can get some much needed advertising breaks
in...

I decided I couldn't just sit on my hands about this, so I've just fired
off an e-mail to the Academy, in the hopes that the Oscar show producers
will change their minds and let Peter perform his song in full (as well
as the nominated musicians from "Slumdog Millionaire"---it's only fair).

If you would like to voice your opinion about letting Peter perform
"Down To Earth" *properly* on the Oscar telecast, then log on to
www.oscars.org PRONTO and let them know (I clicked on the e-mail section
called "Events"). The telecast is only one week away!

Will it do anything? Who knows. But it's worth a try. Peter *should* be
allowed to perform his song on the Oscar show the way it should be
performed! It would be shameful if it doesn't happen.

Thanks,

NY
